CHIP Reauthorization Station
The reauthorization of States Children Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP) is being debated in Congress this year. Over the last 10 years, SCHIP has helped millions of America’s children attain health insurance. But SCHIP has the opportunity to do much more.
What Congress must do:
- Reauthorize SCHIP
- Congress must ensure that there is enough money to at least get the children who are already eligible for Medicaid or SCHIP enrolled. To do this, states will need approximately $50-$60 billion in new federal funds over the next five years.
- Open SCHIP to legal resident children and pregnant mothers
- Remove the harmful and ineffective federal mandate that states require proof of residency to recieve Medicaid or SCHIP benefits.
